This is part 2 of the posts about Urban Meyer's leadership development program at Ohio State. Check out part 1 here.
Ruthlessly eliminate BCD from your life.
BCD stands for blame, complain, defend. Urban strives to build a culture where blaming, complaining, and defending (poor behavior) are unacceptable. He makes a point that BCD has never solved a problem, achieved a goal, or improved a relationship. BCD involves a lot of talk and no action. And 99% of the time BCD is focusing on things beyond our control, which prevents us from placing our attention on the things we can control, like our attitude and effort.
E + R = O
This simple equation stands for event + response = outcome. Aka The R Factor. It was introduced in the last post. It's so important because it emphasizes that we don't control events in life, and we don't completely control the outcomes (like winning and losing). But we always have the choice to control our response. The way we respond means everything. That's the essence of a leader.
Urban and his staff teach their players 6 disciplines of the R Factor.
The main takeaway in this chapter is understanding and internalizing the R Factor. The beauty of the equation E + R = O is its simplicity. Sometimes we disregard the simple things, because we think to ourselves..."leadership is way too complicated to simplify into one equation". And as a result, we search for complex solutions that ultimately cause more confusion. And we end up back where we started. Keep things simple!
When you get crystal clear on your purpose, leadership becomes much more simple. Challenge yourself to pause before you respond to any event, and see if you can act Above the Line.
To emphasize the importance of building your skills, the coaching staff showed OSU players a video of Steph Curry deliberately practicing before games. His pregame routine has become a can't-miss spectacle. He meticulously practices his ball handling, shooting form, floaters, pull-ups, and three pointers. It's a beautiful thing to see...a relentless pursuit to improve and master his skills!
